How To Install Brick Veneer
How to install brick veneer can be broken into two types of brick veneer. Thin brick veneer (typically 1") and standard full-sized\ brick veneer (3-4"). The installation application is different for both but both involve some similar principles
Thin Veneer:
Thin brick veneer needs to be attached directly to some form of substrate, whether it be a wire mesh, cement board or other applications that will help bond the product. The substrate typically consists of a rain screen or some other form of flashing to ensure water either does not penetrate the wall or has an easy outlet to escape behind without damaging the veneer.
Due to the size of thin brick veneer, it is ideal for:
- Walls that have a limit of how much weight it can support.
- Interior decorative walls
Full Bed
Full Bed brick due to its size and weight require a brick ledge made of concrete or engineered steel to support the weight of the bricks being installed above. Full bed brick is known for its durability and long-lasting appeal. Most installations on exterior masonry projects will utilize full bed brick. The brick needs to be installed by a professional mason using either Type S, N or Portland lime cement. Brick ties are required to ensure bricks are attached to the structure. Control joints are recommended every 20ft to help maintain structural integrity.
